My Spine – Photography

My spine is photography. While I don’t have any specific rule to what I take pictures of, I’m trying to find obscure and unusual close-ups, where you don’t know what exactly the object in the photo is until it’s explained. I take every picture with my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 with a 8 megapixel lens, and I edit all of my pictures with the popular mobile application owned by Google, called Snapseed.

Creepy Crawlies

This illustration made my husband squirm, but anyone who has hiked the U.P. knows this little guys well. I know ticks are parasites, but I actually find their seemingly random symmetrical marking patterns very beautiful. Work on this project has slowed as I continue to hunt for paying freelance illustration work. But the board game, Evolve!, is still on track for production, so I’ll keep plugging away!

Halfway through!

Day fifty and I am enjoying the process. In the studio every day and still coming up with more ideas to texture metal which is funny because I thought I would run out of ideas to fill 100 days! Wish we could put up more than one picture because I would like to show the objects I used to make the textures not just the finished piece.
Day 41- nylon window screen; Day 42- perforated paper, one-time use, next time would press harder to make deeper impression; Day 43- metal window screen; Day 44- Brass rings I used in Cuttlebug machine, didn’t do any better in rolling mill, didn’t get the inner lines; Day 45- brass texture plate, like this design but won’t use patina next time, dulls the design; Day 46- canvas, one time use; Day 47- damask cloth, one time use, doesn’t get all the pattern; Day 48- fabric placemat, doesn’t get all the pattern, one time use. Won’t use fabric other than canvas and book cloth at this point; Day 49- plastic placemat, one time use, hardly left an impression; Day 50- plastic dog dish mat with swirly design, very soft and thick, left no impression. Apparently, soft plastic will not leave an impression like the harder plastic in my Cuttlebug folders.

Spine

My spine is to create Spirit Flags (Peace Flags or Prayer Flags) during the 100 day Project. Since my last project I did one image per day and I felt very stressed by that rule… This time I plan on working daily, but not needing to get 100 flags completed. I will aim for about 50, but even that number is allowed to vary. Some days I may complete multiple flags, some days I may start one or two. Whatever will be, will be. I’d like this journey to be meditative to a point while still pushing me through the process. This medium is new to me, so I will allow myself to experiment, play and discover without overly stressing. Seems only appropriate since they are Spirit Flags after all.

First few flags

I enjoyed working on a different media… I thought I had made decisions on details of my work, but as I am creating these I realize I have to think through this material more and then proceed. Still hoping to have 50 flags… But know that may be a challenge, more then I originally thought.

Spirit Flags

Well, At least I finally figured out how to post! My spirit flags have been working through some issue… sewing issues. I have not sewn in awhile and my machine was acting up. This caused a delay in progress. I did however continue with sketches and plans while I tinkered with my sewing machine. After debating on whether to throw in the towel, invest in a new sewing machine or alter my materials I use… my studio partner Christine Saari came to the rescue. She dropped off her sewing machine at our studio! So I am back in business. The good part about this challenge is that I did some serious consideration of various media that I still may integrate.
